5 out of 5 stars Best Album for 10 years   June 4, 2008
After 10 years of personal struggle REM are back with Accelerate there first album in 4 years and it does indeed rock. the follow up to the underated Around the Sun (Panned by everyone from the band press and fans alike - however I prefer it to Reveal which I think is awful)
made with producer Jacknife Lee the album opens up with 'Living Well Is The Best Revenge' which wouldnt sound out of place on Lifes Rich Pagent with Stipe's Snarling lyrics and Peter Buck's traditional Rickenbacker sound and about a minute and a half into the song you hear Backing Vocals from Mike Mills somthing which has been seriously lacking since New Adventures In Hi-Fi.
to be perfectly honest you could say the first 3 songs on the album is the best 3 hit combination on any REM record, That Includes the IRS era.
The album slows down a little in the middle with 'Until The Day Is Done' - which hearlds back to Automatic for the people and is certinaly going to be an anthem for new fans. 'Mr Richards' which has an almost grunge guitar Line but this in my opinion is the weakest song on the entire album, not to say say that I dislike it but to me it just doesnt seem to go anywhere. 'Sing For The Submarine' a song that is little difficult to get ino but once you do its rewarding and it certainly wouldnt have been out out of place on 'Up'.
9 Songs in 2 more to go and it leaves around 4 minutes of album time remaining. 'Horse To Water' reminds me of the reckoning days and is probably the most punk song that the band have ever done. 'Im Gonna DJ' is 2 minutes of fun, nothing more nothing less - the songs seems to have its critics but Im pleased to report on there current tour of the USA the Fans seem to like it.
Overall its a return to form from the boys from Athens, the back to basics approach seems to have worked and I also believe that Bill Rieflin who is on drums seems to have gien the band much needed direction
for anyone who says its poorly produced due to it being 'compressed' word of advice, Buy Accelerate On Vinyl as it sounds much better, for some reason the sound has only compressed on the CD .... but its hardly a distraction

Huh?! What? Where am I? Sorry must have nodded off. Was just listening to the new REM.

Time for Michael Stipe to get a new band.

1 out of 5 stars THE PARTY IS TRULY OVER   June 2, 2008

Hyped dullness to the nth degree. The guy who reviewed this in Record Collector and gave it 5 stars must be in the pay of the record company.

4 out of 5 stars R.E.M, welcome back.   May 29, 2008

This is the beginning of R.E.M.'s rebirth: a fantastic return to form which harks back to the days before they became mainstream. It's a much more heavy album in comparison with their last few attempts.

One of my favourite tracks would have to be Houston, a stark song about the city post-Hurrican Katrina. Excellent and thrillingly addictive. Living Well's The Best Revenge is fast, full of furious guitar and Stipe's near shouting fighter's voice. His songwriting is darkly poetic and wonderfully engaging. Rarely have I listened to an album and fallen in love with every song, but this is one of those exceptions. Truly amazing and definitely worth buying.

1 out of 5 stars Is Their Producer Deaf?   May 26, 2008

As an occasional REM album buyer I bought this CD on the strength of the positive reviews on Amazon. Unfortunately this CD suffers from an increasingly common problem. It sounds like it was mastered by re-recording it playing from a telephone. I guess the producer is using various computer software applications such as a loudness maximiser and valve distortion emulation. Unfortunately, the recording has had all the dynamics and tonal colour squeezed out of it by over-processing and as a result, listening to this CD on a high end system is not much different to hearing an mp3 of it played through the cheapest of speakers. A muddy mess in both cases. Bruce Springsteen's Magic also suffered from this problem, but I listen to that CD in spite of its failings because, in my opinion, it has some of his best songs since Born To Run. Unfortunately, I couldn't make a similar comparison with the quality of songs on this disappointing record.
