5 out of 5 stars Purely Brilliant   December 8, 2007

This album has amazing depth and variety, whilst at the same time the album flows and I dont think there is a weak song on it. It is less catchy than the album Back to Black, but once you have listened to it a couple of times this becomes an advantage rather than a weakness as each song seems to have its own character and charm. If you liked Back to Black and Amy's style and you havn't bought Frank yet, I would definately recommend getting Frank. I bought both at the same time, and whilst Back to Black is also a very good album, its been Frank which has been in my CD player more.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Amy before stardom   November 5, 2007
She's been around for a while, but our beautiful and talented Amy never ceases to impress with her tones and distinctive style. For all those Amy fans out there who just can't get enough - here is some early Amy - still fabulous, still amazing xxx

I bought this after ''Back To Black''

1.Stronger Than Me. 10/10
2. You Sent Me Flying. 5/10
3. Cherry. 9/10
4. Know You Now. 1/10
5. Pumps - Very Good. 11/10
6. I Heard Love Is Blind. 7/10
7. Moody's Mood For Love. 8/10
8. (There Is) No Greater Love. 9/10
9. In My Bed. 7/10

11. October Song. 4/10
12. What Is It About Men. 4/10
13. Help Yourself. 11/10
14. Amy Amy Amy. 5/10

The Verdict. OK. If you like ''Back To Black'' then you will be dissapointed with this more jazzy sound. A few good songs on this LP, for that reason. 6/10

3 out of 5 stars Most disappointing, I bought this after Back To Black   September 10, 2007

I like rock music mainly but I'm open to other genres if something grabs me. I was in a music store when I heard the track 'Back To Black' and my friend said it was by Amy Winehouse. I had to have it, the song was fantastic so I bought the album. Now I didn't expect any song on the album to be better than that one and they aren't BUT the other songs are still very good. I was pleased and thought I'd check out Amy's debut album Frank. Well, this bores me badly. All the songs sound the same, just nothing special at all. You'd have no idea it was the same girl who blasted out the classic songs on Back To Black. All those people who say this is comparable or even better are talking rubbish. This is a transitional album from a young girl with a fantastic voice. The songs are weak here, I'd give it a miss. Let's hope Amy follows up Back To Black with more of the same. I can't see her returning to these sort of songs now she's a superstar.

4 out of 5 stars She was born (like Sarah Vaughan)   August 20, 2007

Sassy Sarah Vaughan is credited in the Winehouse track from this album (`October Song') and it is easy to see why. They share a joy for curious musical mannerisms and both find unique and memorable ways to articulate the colour of key words in the lyric. Both have (had) a suicidal taste for drugs, drink, men and a crippling and hectic lifestyle that includes a frighteningly energetic nightlife. Both appear to be constantly moving, in an unescapable journey, towards their own tragic endings. Both are consummate talents, transcending the gloom around them and heading towards the ether like doomed and spirited moths. Crazy for adventure and blinded by the spotlight.

Frank was released as Amy's debut album in 2003. It says a lot about her that she is now tired (and unhappy) about the results- yet this album received accolades aplenty during that period, including a Novello award for `Stronger Than Me' (the opener) and platinum sales.

Amy's ornamentation and enhancement on the basic melodies for this album really stand out. Swooping high and low, sweetness one moment and depth and sudden anxiety the next. This is a jazz album . Whatever you may have heard or read about the music of Amy Winehouse, please don't assume otherwise. It is not R&B, blues, soul or pop.

Her recent reliance on Mark Ronson (influential `Svengali' type British producer) may have thrashed all-that-jazz out of her heart and mind for her Back to Black album but it is here on Frank in abundance.

For example, `Put it in the Box' is a provoking ride through the ups-and-downs of Amy's tortuous love-life via the soaring highs and low-low depths of her voice. Sweetness and sugar at times and then so dirty and so low.

A lot is said about the song `F* Me Pumps' (yes, the lyrics are explicit) and, for me, it stands out as the strongest song on the disc. It is a catty recollection of a female non-entity who just has a memorable name (as a badge of honour) and is merely looking for a `baller. But is this song introspective? Amy agrees that there would be no nightlife without this girl. She is the life and soul of the party. She is just a vacant pastiche of a human. But very recognisable to us. Very human. Very London 2003.

In the track `What is it `Bout Men', Amy confronts her own condemnation by accepting her self-made Freudian fate and suggesting that her "destructive side has grown a mile wide". This track is gloomy and low but the light is just able to glimmer through, thanks to stylistic elements.

Another stand-out track and a personal favourite (though, heavens knows why... I feel the pain from the `other side' I suppose) is `I Heard Love is Blind'. It is a simple tell-it-from-the-heart lyrical poem about Amy taking pleasure from another man instead of her `regular' guy' because she had a thirst that needed to be quenched. She heroically suggests that, "You are everything - he means nothing to me" but then expects her steady boyfriend to be `alright' with this Frank admission because: " His eyes were like yours and his hair was exactly the shade of brown". Well, that's OK then! Amy's use of humour in this song, not just in the lyrics but in the inflections of key-words and the sensual use of warm tones when they are least welcome, mean that this is a little gem.

All-in-all the album contains 13 tracks (with intro and `outro) and there is not a duff song there. Six of the tracks were made into singles so you are bound to recognise some of the content here. But, because this is ultimately a jazz recording, don't be surprised if it takes a little time and care to get into the disc. Let Amy's voice sooth you, frustrate you and even scare you. Let the music get a hold of you.

Then, if you really don't like it, put it in the box. Frank's already in there and Amy don't care!
