4 out of 5 stars a film review   November 30, 2007

Solidly paced and gripping U Boat film. Opting to fill its near 4 hour running time (directors cut version) with a tension filled pace. You can almost smell the sweat, brine and fear on the screen. It falters at points in my personal opinion but the lead role of the Captain holds the narrative & course of the film steady. To watch him act without speaking is a masterclass in itself!

5 out of 5 stars Best Sub movie   October 5, 2007

This great film, which I originally watched in German, is fantastic. This has to be the best W.W. II Sub film ever made. We follow a German crew on a single mission... Very intense and action filled. The Director's Cut DVD offers vast improvements via re-mastered sound and a crystal clear picture. There are 60 or so minutes of extra footage bringing the length of the movie to well over 3 hours.

5 out of 5 stars Best WWII-movie I've seen to date!!   May 10, 2007

WOW! Okay, to tell the truth - I didn't buy this movie for myself. It was for my Father, but WOW. I hadn't expected THAT!!! I half expected to fall asleep in front of yet another WWII-movie, even one as classic as Das Boot, but Das Boot not only kept me awake - I was glued to the screen.

It is more present, tougher, and truer than any other WWII-movie. This is not a movie of heroes, but a movie about ordinary men, pushed to their limits by WWII, tight quarters, horrific weather, and the threat of enemy destroyers. The viewer is pulled into the submarine's tight quarters and into the lives of the men on board.

I like the fact that Das Boot is a German submarine, and how the movie doesn't draw up the usual Allied - Nazi - line between right and wrong. This isn't about ideology, it's about serving your country, doing what you're supposed to do, and most importantly staying alive.

I highly recommend Das Boot, whether you are a history-buff, avid movie viewer, or looking for entertainment or something meaning to watch and discuss.

Louise.

5 out of 5 stars How do you expect other sub movies to compete?   November 23, 2006

By now you know everyone thinks this is one of the greatest movies in the cinema. It is described as realistic, and has great camera work. You could probably go on forever about the actors and the directors and so forth. What is really interesting is they are all correct; this is one of the best sub movies ever. And you do get swallowed up in the action. There are other movies that can rival this one. Yet it does not diminish what was accomplished here.

The base story is the daily lives of an Unterseeboot crew. It shows the trials and tribulations they must go through to accomplish their missions. One thing you can be sure of is that this is not an anti war movie. They would not be there if they were not hunters.

You do get the feel of what it is like when the hunters become the hunted.

There are several versions floating around out there, each with its own strengths and weaknesses so be sure to pick the one that suites you best. Some of the versions are:
Directors cut
Original version
Wide or full screen
Dubbed in English
Subtitled in English
VHS and DVD
Superbit

5 out of 5 stars Watery Hellish War   August 22, 2006

My copy of this video has a different cover but I believe it is the same version. Compared to the uncut version available and which I also have, recorded from BBC broadcasts, it is not so impressive. The characterization of the officers, especially, is cut to the bone, so one cannot get all the nuances of their behaviour. The poor living conditions on board are not fully exposed either and the attack near Gibraltar appears to have happened just outside Vigo. It's still a hell of a film though and gets the 5-stqr mark for that and for its uncut version. The officers and crew are not very "National Socialist" despite many people thinking that the Navy was the most pro-Hitler service (contrary to the views of qnother reviewer here). The fqct is that, after having been cheated and exploited from 1919 through to 1933, most Germans of all services or none were pro-National Socialist. The film does point out that 75% of the U-boat crews died during the war; neither does it shrink from showing the kind of Allied air attack on ports and other cities which has left French cities like Brest with few old buildings.
