Tiny items March 6, 2008 I struggled with the voice tracker. The instruction books and text size is too small and is dfficult for me to read. The Phillips voice tracker is also too small and therefore the buttons are difficult to see and understand for new users. I expect it will be OK when I have used this item more but a disappointing start. So far the Dragon software looks very promising.

I have tried various versions of dictation software over the past 10 years (IBM ViaVoice, Dragon Dictate etc) and found them to be wanting. So I was sceptical about investing yet again in a type of software application that had previously disappointed. However, the other reviews prompted me to give it another go and I was particularly attracted by the prospect of being able to use a digital recorder.
Installation and set up proved quite straightforward on a Sony laptop operating Vista. The biggest difference I found over previous versions is that Naturally Speaking finds actual words and tries to put them into the appropriate context - earlier versions made up words based on the nearest phonetic sound. So Naturally Speaking gives you actual words but this can be difficult when proof reading - the words may look right but may also be wrong.
The digital recorder that comes with the package is adequate but I found that accuracy was less than acceptable - maybe 70% - 80% even after 'training'. I therefore bought a Sony MX 20 because it's accuracy is allegedly much superior and immediately found improved accuracy - 90% or more. The recorder works best with a headset.
For me the secret to success has been acquiring a good headset and another digital recorder. This significantly increases the cost, so whilst I'm happy with the results I can only give 4 stars because of the added costs.
Impressive! December 16, 2006 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I have had this software for only a week, and have been very impressed. I bought it for planning and writing assignments for an MSc. course, and so didn't expect it to recognise many of the technical terms and references, including names. However, I have been very pleasantly surprised. I tend to mumble and have a Midlands 'twang' which I thought would cause problems - but it has coped admirably. There are some annoying moments when it doesn't reconise a command, but there are facilities to 'train' it on particular words or phrases, and as I've only had it a week I guess these will get less and less. It was very easy to get started, the initial 'training' of the software was very short. I might agree that the instuctions on using the Philips dictation 'tracer' and downloading its files were a little scant, but I got there OK with a bit of intuitive trial and error. I would definitely recommend this product for home or business use.
Superb time saver September 29, 2006 16 out of 16 found this review helpful
I can't say enough good things about this product. I need to work wherever I am and the Philips recorder is sleek and easy to use. Unlike previous comments, I had no trouble hooking it up and loading my words into my word processing programme. A little bit of editing perhaps, but much, much faster than keying in from scratch. This gizmo is goig to change my life!
Just doesn't work August 30, 2006 13 out of 19 found this review helpful
I was very dissapointed. It may be that the software has some initial problems to iron out but this is going back. I have an error message every time I load it. Whenever you activate the microphone within minutes something crashes on the PC. The strangest thing is that this is the mobile edition and comes with a Phillips Digital dictation machine (this is great by the way)The Phillips instruction manual makes no reference to the software and the Nuance manual makes no reference to the dication machine so it is guesswork as to how to link them together. I did manage to get the system working when I was going through the training and I liked the idea but as a practical tool, It is back to ye old keyboard. Maybe Bill Gates and his crew will provide a better solution with the next release of windows?
