Amazon.co.uk Review Maybe you're lucky, and your finances are so simple a pencil and cashbook will keep everything ticking over and in the black. But if you're like the rest of us, Quicken 2002 Standard could be what you need to get back on track. Quicken has been around a long time, but if you're a newcomer, what do you get? Well most importantly it will pull all your financial accounts--current accounts, mortgages, endowments, savings, credit cards, property and the rest--under one roof. Possibly for the first time you will discover your net worth, plan a household budget, ensure bills are met and institute the financial discipline that's the first step to increasing wealth. Inputting account details is the first step (after installation) and is a real cinch. Depending on the number of accounts you have, you should be organised within half an hour or so. Once everything is entered you can generate reports, see where money is going by categorising transactions and check on the performance of your investments. And you can check that your ISAs, pension funds and the rest are on course to deliver the funds you'll need in five, ten or 30 years. Although Quicken 2002 Standard is certainly not a quantum leap forward from Quicken 2001, for existing Quicken users there are enhancements to tempt them to update--you can now automatically reconcile your bank accounts to ensure you have accurate information (no more poring over statements to figure out where that 19.99 went). Budgeting is now a lot simpler, yet more sophisticated--you can mix quarterly and monthly budgets, and Quicken will analyse your input data and use it to create a budget for you. And Intuit has made the program easier to set up than before. You might even start finding finances fun. --John Rennie

Quicken 2003 August 11, 2004 18 out of 18 found this review helpful
I am very disappointed in this software. It doesn't tell you that it cannot import data from older Quicken software until you receive it. The software suggested uninstalling my previous Quicken and if I had I would have lost years of data. I installed 2003 into a new directory but the only way I could use any of the facilities it mentions was to buy an unlock key for $29.95. I am not at all happy with this. My old Quicken 2000 de luxe version was brilliant. But Intuit have destroyed it. As for the new XG version, forget it as you have to pay a subscription so that you can use the on line facilities. What a con!. Anyone else feel the same? Anyone else got any recommendations?
UK buyers / upgraders beware April 12, 2002 183 out of 189 found this review helpful
Quicken does many things well and I have managed my personal finances on it for many years. You probably could too. But the issues I hit in upgrading from Quicken 2000 may give you an insight into Intuit's rather cavalier approach, at least in the UK.Firstly and most critically Natwest Online banking simply is not implemented - although it is advertised on the Quicken web site and mentioned in many reviews. Web postings indicate this did not function in Quicken 2001 either - unbelievable really. I was using a previous implementation in Quicken 2000 and wouldn't have upgraded if I'd known. I did consider downgrading by exporting data and importing to the earlier version ... but problem 2 is that the export facility does not work. Problem 3 is minor in the greater scheme of things ... but extremely annoying. Quicken 2000 had a great facility for managing one of life's minor irritations: the fact that direct debits often have a different first payment value from the subsequent regular payments. Quicken 2000 had a quick and effective way of setting these up. This has just disappeared in Quicken 2002. Infuriatingly there is no way to report problems such as this to the company other than through a premium rate phone line. There is a page headed Quicken2002 FAQs ... but this only contains information relating to previous releases. There is a Feedback link but it says 'page not found'. If you ferret round you can eventually find a page to submit a comment card but only if you can provide an address and phone number in US format. Overall Quicken is a great product but hitting issues like this and having no way to address them with the supplier makes you very concerned about their attitude to their customers....
