4 out of 5 stars Basic, but not a bad piece of software (for the price)   January 9, 2008

This is simply what it claims to be - a piece of drawing software, with the specific aim of creating 'Manga' style comic strips and graphic novels.

Traditionally, these are always in black and white, and the program simulates this. You can have any colour you like, so long as it's black, white, or grey. This does make all the nice colour illustrations on the packaging a tad misleading for anyone who doesn't understand exactly what 'Manga' is.

Personally, I suspect that this 'Debut' version of the software is a cunning marketing ploy. I'm sure many people will be perfectly happy to make rather limited little illustrations with it - but the manual is full of VERY cool features which will get you all excited...but when you try to use them... Oops... you find they're only available in the (considerably) more expensive full version of the program.

You should also note that if you're considering buying this software but are still undecided, you can download a time-limited demo from the eFrontier site.

I eventually bought the full version, and have no regrets (If you already have the Debut version, eFrontier offer a discount on the full version - If you buy it directly from them).

Another minor niggle, which applies to all versions of the software: There is no printed manual - just a (HUGE!!!) user manual in pdf format, which must be read on your monitor. If you're like me and like to study your manuals in an armchair with a cup/glass of something nice, this will be a disappointment.

Niggles aside, you get a great little drawing program for your cash. There's a learning curve, of course, but this is true of all new art software, isn't it?

You have photoshop-type layers, pens, pencils, markers, a neat adjustable 'correction ' feature that will turn your shaky-handed squiggles into professional-looking bold and confident lines, and a host of other features.

Just not nearly as many as in the full version. :)

5 out of 5 stars Great for beginners   July 22, 2006

At first I was put off by the other review left on here, but I'm quite glad I didn't listen and went ahead to buy the product anyway.

This programme may not have all of the thigns the more expensive one does, but if you are buying it to do a first time manga comic, it is more than enough to satisfy the publishers quality demands! The only time it wouldn't be enough I think, would be when you are on contract for a series of comics, but if you do get a contract, you'll be earning enough money to buy the other one anyway, if they don't give it to you as part of the contract! Definite recommendation for beginner Manga- ka's!
