 Spyware galore June 25, 2008
I wouldn't wish this software even in my enemies PC's.
It doesn't even pass the installation stage. Kaspersky Internet Security 7.0 complained more than 50 times that the instalation sequence was trying to run illegal processes, performing suspicious actions (for instance actions aking to rootkit installation). It will install no matter what many Macrovision related files (under the InstallShield folders). Macrovision as far as I remember was the company responsible for the Sony's music CD's rootkit affair.
The end result for me will mean cleaning my hard disk totally and start again by reinstalling Windows (XP sp2). About the actual job that this package claims to do I will never know because it will not be even close to my PC ever again. A waste of time, money and resources. Do not trust.

Why oh why did I not take notice of the previous reviews for this product. I am trying to run this with the new Core 2 duo 3.0 Ghz 45nm CPU from Intel, 2 GB ram and a Gigabyte DS3 Mobo. In a nutshell it is terrible, freezing, crashing and pausing. My PC spec is more than good enough to run this software, Pinnacle should be done under the Trade description Act, it is not fit for purpose.

I received a trial copy of this software with my Panasonic HDC-SD5 camcorder. I did look at the reviews and was a little dubious about installation but as it was a freebee I decided to try it out. I wish I hadn't - the software restarts the computer when it has installed. There's no warning about this, it just happens. In my case Vista would not reload. I had to resort to the startup rescue facility to get back into Vista and even then the product had not properly installed. I tried a second time but with the same result. I had to use system restore to get to a stable system. My system is only six months old and is a top spec HP computer with Pentium duo quad core processor. I can't comment on functionalality because it never functioned. I have to give it one star because that is the Amazon minimum but it doesn't really deserve that. Currently I'm trying out Ulead VideoStudio 11 plus and that installed without a problem and did not try to restart the computer. The 11.5 plus version seems to have the HD editing facilities I'm looking for so I'll probably go for that.

After 3 weeks of trying to get version 9 to work and with out success I see on there knowledge base version 11 they still have not solved the problem of CD\DVD drives being made useless until you go into the registry and remove the line or two of code they tell you to. How they can be allowed to sell a product time and time again with the same problem is beyond me. I am looking for an alternative to Pinnacle so I can do what I want to do and not spend hours reading pages of problem solving. I wish the CD\DVD drive problem was the only one with version 9 but its not. I have no faith with future versions from what I have read and will not be giving them any of my money for future versions.

I have been using Pinnacle's Studio line since Studio 6. In that time I have also used Final Cut, Sony Vegas and of course Windows Movie Maker and a few other less well known packages.
Pinnacle have had a very chequered history with their products. The story has always been roughly the same: out comes Studio something (6,7,8,9,10 or 11), people buy it and discover that its crap - frequent crashes, many bugs. Then they issue a patch - it gets better, then another patch - better still. Finally (round about the seventh or eigth patch) the product is stable, pretty well bug free and the rich functionality, extremely intuitive interface and good rendering quality can finally be appreciated. Everyone is overjoyed with the product until they bring out the next version and the quality goes back to rubbish again and we all have to wait till it is patched back up to an acceptable level. In short, they issue products before they are ready and treat their customers like unpaid beta testers.
Having said that though the important thing is that once you have the latest patched version of the product you have a damned good NLE which compares excellently with the competition and is a darned sight cheaper.
So the best buying policy is: check on Pinnacle's website what the patch level is for Studio 11 and while you are at it check out their support forum to see if customers have reached the overjoyed stage yet or are still finding bugs. If things look OK then buy this product, if not then find a cheap copy of Studio 10 and patch it (10.8 was I think the last). Being a high patched version it will be stable and bug/crash free and being non-current will be available really cheaply (about 12GBP?)
Studio 10.8 is particularly good - it handles HD, 16:9 PAL screen format and chromakey and lumakey compositing as well as multiple audio tracks, precise L. T and J editing, a wide range of transitions and special effects, DVD indexing and burning. It is also very easy to use and renders in the background. All in all its an excellent tool and you should be able to get it at much less than its original retail price. I dont think it works with Vista though.
