The L-558 is an all purpose meter that contains both incident and spot metering capabilities and also flash meter. You should buy this Sekonic meter if you are serious about correctly determining exposure for critical shots in difficult light conditions, which in nature happens often. for me as a photographer, a handheld meter like Sekonic L-558 is important to have. I most often use the meter to determine the subject brightness ratio of a scene I am considering to shoot. What the meter does for me here is allows me to measure the relative brightnesses by calculating the difference in the EV value between the highlights and shadows. Basically, I measure the important highlight and then hit the brightness difference button to show me the correct scene. Then I measure the scene into the shadow areas, holding down the measure button. the L-558 light meter gives me the number of stops between my highlight and any other area. I bought the Sekonic light meter along with my Nikon D200, the metering system in D200 is not as useful as L-558 meter, if you are considering buying meter you should pick up one of the Sekonic light meter.
