Another brilliant workout June 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I absolutely love this DVD, Rodney Yee is a fantastic instructor, guiding you through a slow, yet challenging workout. There is crucial focus on the breath and fluidity of movement. Yee's workouts are truly inspirational and utter genious. Yoga Burn is far mellower than Yee's previous 'Power Yoga' however it still offers challenging, and some familiar poses which require you to truly focus and centre your breath. Due to the level of some of the poses I wouldn't recommend the workout for absolute beginners as it can be really testing on upper body strength particularily the arms. There is a real sense of meditation to the workout, there's no scenic background but this enables you to focus on the movements. The soundtrack also helps maintain the focus and really chills you out. All in all a brilliant addition to my Yee yoga collection and worth every penny.
Getting centred April 5, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This yoga video is lovely and meditative in the sense that you really feel you are getting intouch with your whole body. It has a quiet gentle feel to it. The repetitions let you ease into the poses and deepen the stretch. If you are feeling frazzled and disconnected buy this dvd immediately. Be patient with it. I bought this one and the power yoga one, but keep going back to the Slow Burn because I find the gentle quality of it reconnects me and make me feel centred.
Something a little different June 18, 2006 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
The best thing that happened to yoga in the last decade is arguably the advent of the DVD, and the best thing that's happened to the yoga DVD thus far is without doubt Rodney Yee.
His "Power Yoga" DVD is the one for which he is best-known, but his other productions should not be overlooked. This "Yoga Burn" DVD in particular is a real find, in which Yee presents what he calls "slow burn yoga", which is a hybrid of Astanga's continuous flow, Hatha's more gentle mode and the sports-science approach of performing repetitions. The title "Yoga Burn" might make one assume that's an all-out endurance test, but far from it, it's less demanding than his "Power Yoga", "Intermediate Yoga" or "Advanced Yoga" discs.
A mainly seated practice, this DVD makes a really welcome variation from, say, daily practice of the Astanga Primary Series, or if have missed a few practices due to a busy week and feel not quite up to a full-on vinyasa session, it will help take you back to form but without pushing too hard. That's not to say you won't feel pushed; its slow-moving flow has a meditative intensity, and the sequences diverge from traditional practice which takes some getting used to (for example Cobbler's Pose is used often as an unconventional base position).
In fact in the introduction, Yee explains that "Yoga Burn" is more focused on faster development of body tone which departs from traditional yogic concerns, so be prepared!
As is the norm with Yee's GAIAM productions, it's hard to find fault. It just leaves me praying that GAIAM continue their successful run of highly original and pristine productions. Is there nobody else who can do the same?
NOTE: American NTSC-format DVDs will not play on British PAL DVD players so make sure you buy the right version!
