Flimsy Rubbish January 11, 2008 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought this workbench a year ago. It does not deserve even one star. There is a plastic (yes plastic) well, i can only call it a ribbon running between the two winding handles...so you only have two use one hand when shutting the jaws. This flimsy feature is next to useless as it allows no clamping pressure to be applied, if you attempt this the winding handle will just keep turning and the ribbon will simply skip over the cogs to which it is attached. not to worry though because soon the ribbon snaps...after all there is only so much light duty work it can handle. The runners which attach the two poor quality boards or jaws to the top of the unit are loosly bolted to the wormscrews using a, you guessed it, plastic, sleeve, so if you tighten the unit up too much (in reality this is very little, barely enough to hold a small block of wood in place) the two jaws begin to raise up away from the frame, in a tectonic plate fashion.. at which point some part of the plastic sleeve holding the jaws to the wormscrew will break irreparably.
Do yourself a BIG favour and buy a Wolfcraft bench, they're manufactured in Germany and are bulletproof
Cheapened version of Classic Workmate June 24, 2005 72 out of 78 found this review helpful
I recently bought one of these to go with an old 800 Workmate so I could hold boards and long bits of timber whilst cutting. What Black & Decker don't say is that the 536 is not only a cheapened version of the 825 but that it is not the same height or width as the normal workmate so it cannot be used together. It does not have any of the markings on the top and the lock mechanism is dud. Basically, it is a eunuch! Avoid like the plague and buy the 800 series.
