Seems fairly useless. get the Clarke 4000 April 2, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The real clue to its use lies in the fact you connect it via the cigar lighter socket. There is no way you could deliver enough starting amperage through the cigar lighter so it can only provide more power to a partially flat battery. I agree that it's been totally mis-sold to anyone without an electrical or garage mechanical background. In reality you don't want a booster with an average output of less than 500 amps with a peak of not less than 1000amps. The best buy is probably the Clarke 4000 at around 90. It will start a 4 litre diesel engine on a cold day on a vehicle with a flat battery since it chucks out 700 amps with a peak of 1500 amps.
Don't buy if you have a flat battery.... February 22, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Right, this useless lump of consumer junk is promoted as an alternate to the messy business of jump-leads. All fine and dandy until you learn, as others have who've posted reviews on Amazon about this thing, that it states in the instructions "THIS UNIT WILL NOT START A FLAT BATTERY", great, so what possible use is it?
The charge time is also misleading, it promotes it as 15mins, exactly what you want if you unexpectedly have a flat battery, in actual fact unless you've been charging the unit every couple of months (what sane person would do this)it takes 15hours for a full charge - or as much time as a conventional trickle charger.
Best avoided & the marking department of B&D should be ashamed of themselves for this one.
DO NOT rely on this to get you up and running February 7, 2008 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I agree entirely with markinblack. Only when you get home and read the manual do you realise that it cannot start up a flat battery. So what earthly use is it as unless you have some way of testing the state of your car battery and are prepared to do it on a regular basis. On most occasions the only time you realise something is amiss is when your car doesn't start and you find yourself confronted with what is ,for all intents and purposes a flat battery on a freezing cold morning and you are already late for work. You then have a better chance of getting your car battery recharged using a watch battery rather than this poor excuse of a booster. My advice is get a decent jump start kit (which is only really a battery with a handle). You could take a chance with some of the cheapies (which get fairly good write ups) but if you have a diesal or your car has an engine capacity larger than 2 litres or you want something with that is more than 90% certain of getting you up and running then get yourself a Clarke 4000 jump start kit. Its a bit pricey (83.00 inc VAT) and a bit on the heavy side (20kg) but its easy and safe to use ( unfortunately you do have to open your bonnet) and is also powerful enough to jump start a jumbo jet (well maybe not a jumbo but certainly your run of the mill saloon).

this does what it says on the box, a great item to have in your car. saved me once already.
According to the instructions this will not start a flat battery!!! January 20, 2008 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
If you are considering buying one of these, as I did, think twice. You need to know that (I quote from the instructions): "This will not start a flat battery". This fairly crucial information is stated in two places in the instruction booklet - but not on the box. In other words, despite this thing being called "Simple start" and a "car starter", and showing photos of a car being jump-started, it will NOT start your car if you've flatted the battery. This in my mind rules it totally useless for most purposes. Most people will have bought this as in insurance against a flat battery. The TV advert, and the box gives this impression - but don't rely on this piece of kit to do this. To me, this is mis-selling.
