Amazon.co.uk Review In the future, crime is out of control and New York City is a maximum security prison. Grabbing a bargaining chip right out of the air, convicts bring down the President's plane in bad old Gotham. Gruff Snake Plissken, a one-eyed warrior new to prison life, is coerced into bringing the President, and his cargo, out of this land of undesirables. Kurt Russell puts his Disney days (he played the squeaky clean hero in such films as The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, 1970) behind him as the nicest bad guy in the picture. All comic-book sensibilities and macho posturing, this is one of writer/director John Carpenter's better brainless escapades, brimming with snappy one-liners and explosive action scenes. However, the film lacks tension and some believability even within the realm of SF fantasy. Even when it fails to gel, though, it always manages to amuse, thanks in great part to a varied and unusual supporting cast (watch for Ernest Borgnine as a cabdriver and Isaac Hayes, one-time soul singer and now best known as South Park's chef, as The Duke of New York). Followed in 1996 by Carpenter's overdone and campy Escape from L.A. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Escape from New York February 22, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It's probably easy for some people to depise this film, but I love it! It's so wonderfully dark and depressing. Snake Plissken is such a cool character, and Kurt Russell was amazing playing him. I guess you have to try it first to see if it's for you! I had to watch it three times before I grew to enjoy it tremendously.
"A Royal Pain In The Neck!" December 5, 2004 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
John Carpinter dose it again, Excellent! An original in it's own right with a good sequel. But it's a real pain in the neck to find, thats how good it is. Escape from New York, and Escape from LA are like two brothers living at seprate ends of the universe. You can find Escape from LA around every decent highstreet shop, you can't miss it, but Escape from New York is like finding a needle in a haystack ,as many put it. One of the best Sci-fi movies ever made. I can't wait for the re-release on DVD March 28th 2005 but until then, like I said it's a "A Royal Pain In The Neck" (good but hard to find). My Advice:- You have a chance to get it, get it, otherwise you might not get another chance till, March 28th 2005
Escape from New York November 23, 2004 The crime rate in the USA rises 400% and Manhattan island is the one maximum security prison. An organisation hijacks the president's jet and they crash in the middle of it. Snake Plissken, who was on his way in there anyway for robbery,is asked to rescue the president and bring him back in 24 hours. If he does, he'll receive full pardon for every crime he's commited in the United States. A chillingly horrible atmosphere, great acting all round, and the coolest "bad" hero ever!
"Snake Plissken?....I thought you were dead" August 14, 2003 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
John Carpenter has a fair share of classic's under his belt, (Halloween, The Thing, Big Trouble In Little China, etc) but Escape From New York is in my opinion his best film to date.Kurt Russell is 'Snake Plissken' a former war hero turned convicted criminal, captured and persuaded to enter Manhattan (the island having now been turned into a maximum security prison), to rescue the president, after his plane 'Airforce 1' is hijacked by terrorist's and crashes somewhere on the island. The cast are brilliant, the movie action-packed and John Carpenter delivers one of my favourite film's ever. Unfortunately the DVD package contains no extra features at all, but who cares when you have a great movie like this.
Call me Snake....A no.1! November 6, 2002 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
John Carpenter is one of the most imaginative guys out there in the film world, so it stands to reason that he would pull something like this off. This movie has "Classic" scrawled all over it and deserves it too. The movie centers around Manhatten being turned into a maximum security prison were all the scum and low lives are sent. The president (played by Donald Pleasence) gets shot down as his plane flies over and is lost. Snake Plissken (yes thats were Iriqouis Plissken from Sons of liberty is from) a hardened criminal played brilliantly by Kurt Russell is finally captured, his choice, go into New York as a perminant guest or go into New York as a hero and look for the president and a disk he was carrying, after bringing him out he will be cleared of all charges. this film is seriously top notch and will be enjoyed by Action film lovers as well as Sci-Fi fans alike. If you enjoy this then check out some other Carpenter classics like The Thing and Halloween.
