Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Story of Us is about the fear of potential separation most marriages are supposed to experience. Personalities clash; identities blur; responsibilities weigh heavy. This, then, is an exploration of the Jordans, an average American couple who can't find any reason to stay together after 15 years. Once you get past the star power of Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer, there's a terrifically pithy script working for them that effectively manages to juggle the genre crossover of a comedy-drama. Several montages cover years of petty squabbling, raising two kids, and long silences. There are confessions to camera about who picked what fight, and flashbacks to time spent offloading with friends. These provide the comedic backbone, with director Rob Reiner hogging the best lines. The best gag and narrative device is a bedroom scene following a therapist's revelation that every couple goes to bed with their parents' way of thinking rattling around in their minds. Sure enough, the super-wide bed shows all six in hilarious fashion. Despite the general paranoid atmosphere that everyone's doomed, you can rest assured that the guy who brought you When Harry Met Sally allows optimism to prevail.

On the DVD: Reiner's commentary is a little sporadic, but like the great stand-up comic he always seems to be, each comment is priceless. He explains how he hates acting, yet can't help himself. A 20-minute documentary interviews all the cast and also composer Eric Clapton, and they all give their pessimistic views on why relationships break down. Willis is in fine form telling us that it was "so much more challenging than running down a street with a gun and shouting"! The widescreen presentation is crisp, as is the 5.1 sound. One trailer rounds out the package. --Paul Tonks

4 out of 5 stars I'm really glad I saw this movie   April 2, 2002

I enjoyed Bruce and Michelle's acting so much in this movie. This movie is about children, love and middle ages. I saw this moive in a theater at first, and I didn't regret one cent of the money I spent. Also, Supporting actors were fantastic as well.
But I wouldn't recommend this movie to action movie lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Good acting, enjoyable, made me cry a bit too!!   February 22, 2001

I really enjoyed this movie, not a box office hit but good and really sweet acting from Willis (away from the action movies) and an amazing speech at the end by Pfeifer. overall the kind of movie that makes you think that even the unhealthiest of relationships can survive if the love is there - brill :)

2 out of 5 stars American Beauty without the wit, insight or intelligence!   November 12, 2000
4 out of 10 found this review helpful

The Story Of Us looked promising. Bruce Willis and Michelle Pfeiffer team up with director, Rob Reiner in a "When Harry split up with Sally" type film. So far so good......

In order to sustain 90 minutes, you would expect humour, insight and intelligence as this is treading similar ground to "American Beauty". But unfortunately it is nowhere near as good. The plot meanders and has TV movie written all over it. The two stars have zero chemistry. Annette Benning and Kevin Spacey had real chemistry and their characters really did know how to hate!

Instead of feeling sympathy for the main characters you are willing them to get a divorce and get off screen as quickly as possible. With only a superb comic star turn from Rita Wilson as Pfeiffer's best friend and an amusing sub-plot about a holiday couple from hell, there is not much to salvage among this nightmare comedy wreckage.

Don't bother spending time with this bland couple, go and rent "The War Of The Roses" and see how a break up movie should be done!
