Brilliant! June 27, 2008 I think this has to be one of the most under-rated Bristish films out there. OK so it's not for everyone, if you're looking for a braindead rom-com this probably wont be up your alley. If you're looking for a highly humane drama with excellent acting and music and script then look no further. Not only that but repeated viewings expose more and more details from the interlocking stories.
Brilliant!
Never seen a move boring movie November 9, 2006 1 out of 14 found this review helpful
This has to be without a doubt the most boring movie ever. Digging your eye-balls out with a blunt garden instrument is preferable to watching this movie.
A humane, intelligent British film January 17, 2006 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This is one of the best British films I've seen in the last few years. Great acting, great music, and the rural East Anglian setting is a nice change from the gritty urban backdrop of most modern Brit flicks. The three-part structure is clever without being too intrusive. Seeing the same story from different points of view helps you understand several of the characters who seem selfish or unsympathetic at first. You get to see their vulnerability and appreciate their 'good side' - it's a very humane film. The overall mood is a bit sad and wistful but it's also emotionally uplifting and even has a few jokes in it. Highly recommended.
Intelligent, subtle and true to life. June 2, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
How refreshing to see a film that punches way above its budgetary weight, making a mockery of big budget star driven and cloying Hollywood fayre. As anyone who watches the "extras" contained in the DVD package will discover, the guts of the film draw on the talents and commitment of a fine ensemble of British actors. There is no sense of the directors ramming a story / life view down your throat and the way in which it reflects real life, with a never ending stream of interlocking events and perspectives is seamless. Some fine acting -- people won't be surprised to know that Bill Nighy is magnificent, and that Douglas Henshall and Josephine Butler have an effortless natural charisma that fills the screen. It's a film that will reward watching repeatedly to fully capture the matrix of emotions and events, so brilliantly captured in the film score. A film for all seasons and stages of life.
Excellent British Film October 30, 2004 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
This film is many things, of which 'hilarious' is definitely not one of them. Beautifully filmed with a wonderful setting and equally brilliant soundtrack. I smiled, I cringed and I cried. And then I went out and bought a copy of it. Very cleverly mastered with a poignant and powerful look into the lives of three people who were touched by the death of another. As one critiqe put it 'No weddings and a Funeral'. In the same genre as Perfect Strangers and Shooting the Past. If you like quirky British filmmaking, you will love this.
