An Amusing and Somewhat Educational Video!!! January 14, 2003 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I remember seeing this when it ran the series on BBC but now I have it on video it is still very good. John McCarthy and Sandi Toksvig circumnavigate the British Isles by sea and see many great places around Britain's coast line and islands as well as meeting some interesting people. John and Sandi have a great chemistry in their special friendship and that helps them to see things in good humour and overcome the many difficulties they encounter as they learn the art of sailing from scratch under the supervision of skipper Tom Cunliffe. I found this video brought happiness and sadness and share such emotions with John and Sandi. I found this to be an edu-tainment video as didn't realise just how many great places, sights and people there is around the coast of Britain. Recommended for all ages :-)
WHAT A GEM! April 21, 2002 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I laughed, I cried, I felt seasick ... what more could I have wished for? Not having seen this series on television, I'm so glad to have bought it on video. The very special relationship between Sandi and John comes across so well, and it was enjoyable seeing so much of our wonderful island. The section where John visits Portland Prison is very sad, but also strangely uplifting. More please (but less heavy seas)!!
Relaxing and amusing November 16, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Originally a TV series, this tale of two unlikely friends and sailors is perfect winter viewing. Prior to his long ordeal as a hostage, John McCarthy was an old friend of Sandi Toksvig and when the opportunity arose for the pair to sail around the coast of Great Britain they seized the chance. Whilst incarcerated, John McCarthy and his fellow hostage Brian Keenan dreamt of freedom and for John this centered on a vision of a wooden sailing ship. Enter Herta and her terrifyingly wonderful skipper. Sheer hard work, complete exhaustion and some great laughs - you can share them all with John and Sandi. You can also share the very moving moment when McCarthy and Keenan meet up again for a pint of Guinness. Highly recommended - a very good Christmas present.
