Summerslam is traditionally the WWF's second best event of the year (with the first being WrestleMania). This Summerslam event doesn't let the others down, with some excellent matches making up for the poorer ones.Goldust vs. Brian Pillman - Pillman is highly regarded as one of the world's best wrestlers before his untimely death in 1997, and Goldust (Dustin Runnels) is an accomplished performer, and this match showed both of them in fine form. A solid, if unspectacular match.
Disciples of Apocolypse vs. Los Boricuas - a typical 8-man tag team match between two teams who never really got going. A normal, solid match between these teams, who later went on to have about 20 matches, all near enough the same. A few good performances from individuals, but nothing brilliant. A typical mid-card match.
Legion of Doom vs. The Godwinns - a tag team match between two accomplished teams, and in the Legion of Doom's case, hugely popular. A good fued between the two teams set this match up nicely, and some good high risk moves mixed with typically hard hitting and slow holds made this an enjoyable, if somewhat unexciting match.
Mankind vs. Hunter Hearst Helmsley in a Steel Cage - perhaps the main reason to buy this event. Two awesome wrestlers, who would later go on to become two of the greatest wrestlers in WWF history. Mankind (Mick Foley) wrote about this match extensively in his book "Have a nice day", and about the intense pain he felt when the cage door was slammed on him by Chyna, Hunter's sidekick, and the awesome move he performed from 15 foot in the air. A brilliant, intense match, that manages to be enjoyable and awe inspiring at the same time. In summary, a typical Mankind match, but helped by the brilliance of Hunter.
Ken Shamrock vs. British Bulldog - two powerful, intense wrestlers combined here to create a good match, with some powerful moves, and a fast exchange lead to an exciting match with the European title at stake.
Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Owen Hart - this Intercontinental Title match was several months before Owen broke Steve's neck in a rematch to this one, and this match had everything. Austin is possibly the greatest ever entertainer, and with Owen being recognised as the greatest ever wrestler not to win the WWF Title, this match lives up to the billing, between this two great competitors.
Bret Hart vs. The Undertaker - this WWF Title match had a great storyline before it, which made this match seem even better. The guest referee was Shawn Michaels, and with the stipulation being that if Michaels referred in The Undertaker's favour, he would be banned from wrestling, and with Hart saying he would never wrestle again unless he won the title, this match had everything in terms of suspense.
Buy this tape to find out if Michaels and Hart could put their differences aside, or if one of them ended up never being able to wrestle again.
Excellent event, and a few awesome matches keep the Summerslam tradition going strong.
