Amazon.co.uk Review Created by and starring Bolton-born comic Peter Kay, Phoenix Nights is one of those rare gems that few saw on first showing but that everyone was soon talking about. The first series introduces wheelchair-bound Brian Potter (Kay), who runs the titular Phoenix, a shabby social club populated by an assortment of wonderfully observed characters. It's grim up North and despite the best efforts of the staff to inject life into the proceedings--be it an alternative comedy night, a version of Robot Wars in Potter's beloved Pennine Suite or a Wild West extravaganza--each evening's entertainment always ends badly. Undaunted, the Phoenix denizens continue to strive for their dream: a world in which "clubland never dies". The beginning of the second series sees Brian Potter's beloved Phoenix Club lying in ashes and the staff scattered to the four winds. Even club compere Jerry St Clair is reduced to singing "Come get your black bin bags" to the tune of Men in Black in the local supermarket. But not even being barred from having a licence for the rest of his natural life can deter the northern Svengali from reopening the club and making it bigger and better than before--even if that means making Jerry the licensee and offering up-market Chinese nosh. --Kristen Bowditch

HE'S GOT THE ALL CLEAR! July 28, 2007 I love Phoenix Nights! It's brilliant stuff. Peter Kay is one of my favourite comedians. Follows on from his first series 'That Peter Kay Thing'. There are some brilliant characters, played really well by some great actors who obviously had a brilliant time filming it all.
One of my favourite episodes is episode 5 from series 1. It really shows how old comedy is the best. Jerry 'The Saint' has an argument with some fat, drunken yob in the audience who is insulting him and accusing him of being unfunny when he is on stage. Jerry replies to the guy's torrent of seriously unfunny, modern comedic lines with some absolutely hilarious examples of old, classic comedy.
A great line is when they present a 'Wild West Night' at the club, and they have gunslingers. Some short, Irish guy comes in to have a go at gunslinging and Jerry says 'What do you want to be when you grow up son...taller?!'
Brilliant stuff!
I agree, ignore the aussie below! genius! August 13, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Phoenix Nights has to rate as one of the funniest comedy series ever. Superbly written, brilliantly observed characters, everything you could want is here. Its just plain and simple, its wonderful. Jerry St Clair dressed as a giant berry, Brain Potter getting stuck in his stair lift, Talent Trek in Series 2 are just a few of the gems that will have you laughing until it hurts. Peter Kay, we love you!
Ignore the Aussie below. Black Books!!!? April 9, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I watched series 2 today for the first time in about three years-it's even better than I remember it. The humour is in the fact that the characters are very-well-observed charicatures of how people tend to be 'up North'. Go to Blackpool for the weekend and count how many Kenny Dalglish Snrs you see! In my opinion there have been three modern classic comedies from the past ten years- The Office, The League of Gentleman and Phoenix Nights and this edges it by a nose. Give it another ten years and it will take it's place among Only Fools and Horses, Red Dwarf and the others as an all-time British comedy classic. Well, it might get somewhere close to Only Fools...
Funny as toothache. February 2, 2006 5 out of 38 found this review helpful
I bought this based on the reviews it's received having not seen Peter Kay before. I don't quite know what I was expecting but probably something along the lines of Black Books, The Office or Spaced, oh how wrong could I be? I've watched the first two episodes of season 1 and barely cracked a smile, it's just not funny, perhaps it's because it's too close to the bone but to me I felt like I was watching real people, not comedy. Maybe you have to live in Northern England to appreciate the comedy but sadly it just doesn't do it for me. A wasted purchase.
Amazing July 30, 2005 29 out of 31 found this review helpful
This dvd is just one of the funniest things around. Peter kay is just a comic genius. Some of the characters he creates are amazing. Also the acting is brilliant and the timing for the jokes is perfect.I think series 2 is better than the 1st series but they are both great. Onto the extras. Well they are just as funny. The outtakes are some of the funniest i have ever seen because most of the actors are comedians. There are plenty of outtakes where the cast just cant stop giggling. The extras are worth the amount of the dvd alone. Please buy this dvd and please say if this review has been helpful.
