A poor performance by the star August 6, 2004 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
Speaking as a Leigh enthusiast I have to say that this is one of her most wooden performances in what otherwise could have been a good film. She rarely allows herself to feel the part either when she is in love, or on her deathbed, or plagued with the jealous superstitions which arise from her ill fated affair. Leigh is far too concerned in this role, and at this period in her life, at impressing on the critics her suitability as a female heir to the mantle of Olivier. Or at least she is so affected by her concern to speak correctly in a phonetic and highly royal way that she rarely allows the glimpses of her talent that we could expect of her. This is Leigh basking in her own self glory as the self assumed female actress of her generation. The result is pompous and unbelievable Anna with non of the humanity we might expect of Tolstoy's masterpiece or evident in the later French production. The saving grace are very fine performances from lesser known actors and Ralph Richardson as the jilted moralistic husband outraged at the impression of scandal caused by Russian society.
This is a fantastic film! March 21, 2000 2 out of 11 found this review helpful
Vivien Leigh is a Very Special "Anna Karenina", and the film becomes the classic novel of Tolstoy a spetacular entertainment!
